(This may take a minute if there are a lot of photos in the series)
In May 2013 we featured Sam & Lisa's two story gambrel Garage/Shop in Skamokawa, WA. (pronounced "Ska-MOCK-a-way") Lisa bought our 24x30 Garage/Shop plans and stretched it to 40' in length. They also extended the 'half loft' into a full second floor and added our Shed Roof to each side. We'll let Lisa tell the story.
We tend to build when it is cold and wet so we started our barn in December 2009.
We hired a local contractor to do the actual construction.... Scott from H&K Construction.
Including setting up and pouring the foundation.
After the foundation was poured the rains hit just as we were getting the site ready for gravel.
Remus the Cat does a quick foundation inspection.
Note my boots in the mud. LOL.
We would come behind and cleanup and we did the dirt/gravel related work, so we made their labor as efficient as possible for the bottom line.
The sun then came out just in time to frame up the walls.....
and get the loft floor in so we'd have a little workspace....
Gave us a nice dry spot (well sort of) to finish cutting all the wood for the trusses.
Now it's time for the trusses- Justin gets gluing.
While Darrel gets nailing.
The truss construction was the most fun day of the project!
Both from the fact it was dry and sunny and your great plans made it so easy to do.
The jig worked very well and the three guys had the trusses done in one day.
So, one day to pre-cut and one day to make. Awesome!
The crows beak 4x4 was set back into the trusses for extra strength, which you cannot see.
Scott, the owner, and Justin start laying out the plywood for the roof. No, Scott's not tired of the job....that's his tape measure!
They started on the Shed Roof and went right up to the ridge.
They got half of the roof sheeted in less than a day!
Next morning they got started on the other side.
Sam does the final adjustments on the double sliding doors.
Roof's on and the doors are done. It's really taking shape!!
Love that 'Crow's Beak'. It's so....... barny!!
We might do a concrete floor later but, for now, gravel is fine.
You will note we moved the stairway toward the front right to accommodate a sliding door at the back of the barn.
We painted the floor decking with porch paint for easy cleaning. Husband built a dutch door, and the bottom is locked shut. The top door is a French door
Winter turned to Spring and then to Summer. . waited until all dried out and it was time to paint.
We primed the entire exterior wood sheeting and then put on the battens. Painted the battens, then came back and painted the entire barn the old fashion way.... with brush and roller.
Color chosen was Sherwin Williams SW 7593 Rustic Red. Trim is SW6385 Dover White.
With the Shed Roof on both sides we've got tons of parking and cover!
Notice that foundation is higher than usual? Yep, goes back to living in an area with a lot of dampness and keeping that wood off the ground so it lasts at least a few hundred years. LOL.
Well, there it is....our new barn. We LOVE it!! Even dodging the weather we managed to finish it up in about four months from foundation to the last lick of paint for just over $22K, including labor AND materials. That figures out to about $11 per square foot, finished! You can't beat that! Thanks for the great plans, Dano!
